How to Organize a Small Closet

24 May 2022

Everyone dreams of having an organized and clean closet, but that simply isn’t the reality for many of us. Small closets can be difficult to keep tidy, but there are some steps you can take to make the most of your space. Follow these tips, and you’ll be well on your way to having an organized closet that you can be proud of.

1. Start with a clean slate.

The first step to organizing any space is to declutter. Go through your closet and get rid of anything you don’t need or haven’t worn in a while. It will make it easier to organize what’s left and give you a better sense of the items you actually have to work with.

You can donate or sell items in good condition and throw away anything damaged beyond repair. Some of us have difficulty letting go of clothes, but it’s important to remember that holding onto items you don’t need only takes up valuable space in your closet.

2. Use vertical space.

When you’re dealing with a small closet, it’s essential to use every inch of space available to you. That means using the entire height of the closet and not just the floor space.

Hang as much as you can from hooks or racks on the walls or door. It will free up space on the floor for other things and help you see everything you have at a glance. If possible, invest in some shelves to store things like shoes or boxes of off-season clothing.

3. Invest in some storage solutions.

Storage containers can be a lifesaver when organizing a small closet. They can help you keep things sorted and tidy and make it easy to find what you’re looking for. Look for stackable containers and label them accordingly to make things even more accessible.

There are all sorts of containers available, so take some time to find the ones that will work best for you and your space. Baskets, bins, and boxes are all excellent options. You can even get creative and repurpose things you already have around the house.

4. Double up on hangers.

If you’re not already using slimline hangers, now is the time to switch. They take up far less space than traditional hangers and can make a big difference in how much clothing you can fit in your closet.

You can also save space by using double hangers to store items like skirts or tank tops. Simply put one thing on each side of the hanger, and voila! You’ve just doubled your hanging space.

5. Find the right furniture.

If your closet is on the smaller side, you might want to consider investing in furniture that can double as storage. A dresser or chest of drawers can be a great way to store jeans, sweaters, or bedding items.

Just be sure to measure the space before you buy anything to know it will fit comfortably in your closet. You don’t want an item of too big and bulky furniture, as it will just make the space feel even smaller.

A small closet doesn’t have to be a source of frustration. With a little bit of decluttering and some smart storage solutions, you can turn even the smallest closet into an organized haven. Just remember to take things one step at a time and be patient, and you’ll be surprised at what you can accomplish.
